In November I accompanied Megan Pratt, a Year 9 student, to the Young Geographer of the Year Awards. We were made very welcome by Steve Brace, Head of Education and his team.  Steve hosted the awards and congratulated the 18 students on successfully winning one of the awards.  He advised that they had received just under a thousand entries this year, mainly from the UK, however there were some entries from the continent. He went on to say that the standard was extremely high and that the task of identifying the winners was daunting.There were three categories: 12 years and under, 13-15 and 16 to 18.  In each category there was one overall category winner and five highly commended winners, of which Megan was one.  He spoke a little about each winning entry and stated that the awards had been given based on 'geographic' content and understanding of the subject matter. The awards were made by Benedict Allen, who spoke to the group of his 300 mile journey through the Amazon Rainforest.  His speech was extremely humorous and informative and I am sure he has inspired a number of the students to follow in his adventurous footsteps!Megan received a 'goody bag' along with a year’s subscription to the Geographical Magazine.  There will be a full write up of the awards, with photographs, in the February or March edition of the magazine and I will ensure Megan brings a copy into school when it arrives.  The whole experience was very worthwhile.The awards were dominated by Grammar schools and it was great to see Imberhorne’s name alongside them.
