Maths in Action

Our super keen Sixth Form Maths students relished the opportunity to meet a crack team of mathematicians, engineers, statisticians, architects, code-breakers and data scientists in December. They visited 'Maths in Action' in London, which featured five lively and enriching sessions exploring a variety of topics carefully designed to extend students’ knowledge. Our Year 12 and 13 students enjoyed:

Simon Singh - pure maths, Fermats last Theorem and the maths in the Simpsons

Dr Sara Jabbari on the mathematical models behind disease and anti-biotics

Tim Hardford, an economist and BBC Radio 4 presenter of More or Less talk about statistics and how powerful they are

Ed Southall leading a session on geometry puzzles

Matthew Scroog on the maths behind computer games such as pacman and asteroids

It was a really good, fully packed day and the students (and staff!) found it really interesting.
