A few months ago, some students approached the school asking if it would be possible to try and achieve Fairtrade School status. The students were already involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award so their idea fitted appropriately with the ‘Service’ section of the award. Students, D. Johnstone, M. Johnson and D. Bond, organized a committee (which now comprises seven KS3, KS4 and Sixth Form students) - decided a really good way of achieving Fairtrade status for the school (while promoting the cause) would be to hold a Fairtrade quiz and curry night. This was held on Friday 27th February and proved to be a huge success. There were eight teams: over 40 staff, students, parents and siblings ‘fighting’ for the title of ‘Fair Trade Champions’. The quiz consisted of a number of rounds of themed questions: Maths & Music, Flags of the World and Sport, among others. Each team was marked on the number of questions answered correctly plus the opportunity to play a ‘joker’ that allowed them to double the points from a particular round.The curry, both chicken and vegetarian varieties, was prepared, cooked and served by the committee, with the help of our Catering Manager, Jo Lee. They also made a fabulous dessert of hot bananas stuffed with chocolate, served with ice cream! The ingredients used to make the food were Fairtrade products where possible. All the prizes for the evening were Fairtrade too. Money was also raised through a raffle, including ‘selling Duncan to teams’ to help them with difficult questions (this was very popular!). The evening was a great success. Everyone commented on how enjoyable it had been. In the end, the team of Governors were crowned champions and hope to return next year to defend their title. In total, we raised £415, which will be split between Oxfam’s Fairtrade projects and the school’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
