For Imberhorne’s fourth Spanish Homestay trip, 33 Year 9 students and four teachers departed on Saturday 12 th September for five days of fun activities and practising Spanish.

We arrived in Alcalá de Henares mid afternoon and were greeted by a welcoming group of host families. After settling into our homes for the week, we met together as a group for the evening to explore a little bit of the town. Everyone was settling in well, we had all eaten a typically big, late Spanish lunch, the sun was shining and, as we wandered through the picturesque square full of Spaniards enjoying their evening “paseo”, we were a very contented group indeed!

The following morning a very excited group gathered to head off to the Warner Brothers Theme Park. Sun cream was the order of the day once again and we were looking forward to cooling off on the water rides. Despite the chaos which ensued in actually getting us into the park (Spanish organisation at its very best!) we all had a great day and everyone (except perhaps Mrs Hutcheson and Miss Sharratt!!) made the most of the excellent rides that are there. Some particularly brave students went on rides they would never have dreamed of even looking at prior to the trip!

Then on Monday we visited the stunning old city of Toledo. It really is beautiful and, despite lots of walking in the extreme heat, everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. We even provided the locals with entertainment as our students sang and danced in the main square! In the evening we went to a bowling alley where things got very exciting as everyone tried to win their particular match.

On a warm, sunny Tuesday morning we set off to Madrid for a guided tour of the city. We visited many famous sites and buildings – including the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza de España and the Las Ventas bullring. I think the highlight for many people however, was the trip to the Bernabeu stadium where students had their photos taken with trophies and players! Lots of smiling faces and new football strips on the way home this evening!

For our final day we set off once again to Madrid, but not until after we had eaten a breakfast of chocolate and churros. We had never seen so much food coming out of a kitchen and, even with Mr Kay’s giant doggy bag full of leftovers, there were still enough churros for breakfast for the rest of the week! A few kilos heavier, we set off to see the famous Guernica painting by Picasso. Love it or hate it (or just not understand it!) you cannot fail to be impressed by the painting and the sad, true history behind it. The Year 9s will be studying the painting later in the year, so it was a fantastic opportunity for them to see it in real life.

A bit for relaxation in the Retiro Park followed, with some of our students once again bursting into song and this time being given money for their efforts! Being absolutely wonderful, responsible students however, they returned the money to their appreciative audience as they weren’t sure if they needed a license to busk! (Continues opposite).

After this we headed home to a final evening dinner of tapas with music provided by a Tuna. Everyone joined in with the dancing and singing, some of the ladies were even serenaded by the minstrels in the Tuna.

All too soon it was Thursday morning and time to go. We were sad to leave and lots of hugs and kisses were shared as we said goodbye to our hosts and set off for home.

Once again this was a great trip made excellent by the fantastic students who came with us. This year we had an exceptional group of young people who did themselves, their parents and the school proud. They even made the man in the bullring museum smile – something I never thought I would see!

My thanks go to them and to Miss Sharratt, Miss McGeer and Mr Kay for all their help and enthusiasm.

¡Que viva España!
