Free School Meals

We encourage the take up of Free School Meals by working proactively with our parents and carers. If, through your financial circumstances, you feel your son/daughter may be entitled to free school meals, please either click here to complete the online form or complete the paper application form and submit it to West Sussex County Council. The criteria for eligibility are included below. If a student is entitled to free school meals and lives within 2 miles of the school, they may be eligible for free school transport. Parents/Carers should complete the West Sussex County Council form found by following this link

The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.
The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011 and is allocated to schools to work with pupils who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years (known as ‘Ever 6 FSM’). In most cases the Pupil Premium is paid direct to schools, allocated to them for every pupil who receives free school meals. Schools decide how to use the funding, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision their pupils need.

Imberhorne School is committed to valuing all students equally, addressing barriers to learning, meeting the academic, social and pastoral needs of all students and narrowing the attainment gap between socially disadvantaged students and their peers.

The school receives dedicated Pupil Premium funding to support the education and welfare of disadvantaged students.  Please see below for our Pupil Premium Strategy report.  This is reviewed annually in October. The next date for review is October 2022.

Year 7 Literacy and Numeracy Catch-up Premium

The Year 7 Literacy and Numeracy Catch-up Premium was additional funding that was allocated to schools up until September 2020 on the basis of the number of pupils who gained a Key Stage 2 Maths or English Scaled Score of 94 or less. The school’s aim was to provide high quality intervention classes in English and Maths in Year 7, staffed by specialist teachers, so that students closed the attainment gap with other students in the school. This would allow students full access to the school’s curriculum for the rest of their academic career at the school. The funding was discontinued in September 2020.

We are accountable to our parents and school community for how we used this funding. In meeting this requirement, we are aware of our responsibilities under the Data Protection Act not to identify individuals or groups.

The funding was spent on small group intervention work, with groups of no more than 3, from specialist English and Maths staff.

What was the impact of this spending?


English:  18 Students

Maths:   23 Students

Unfortunately, due to the Covid 19 outbreak, the programme was curtailed and it was difficult to assess progress over the period.
